Composition, backgorund, lighting and edit. These skills and many more I had to learn to create amazing product pictures. Check out the steps for great product photography!

Product Pictures
Product photography is a field full of growth and learning.

Hey friends :)

Today I want to present you the journey of the whole product photography process and which skills I had to master. Spoiler: Many. This field was completely new for me and it took way longer than expected - but the results are amazing. Check out what I did to save time and nerves :D Let's go!

Ok. To be self-employed includes many jobs. Yes, we all know. You have to deal with countless tasks and jobs but there is one field which stands out: The photography part. It requires much creativity input and a lot of trial and error.

In no other field I developed so many skills than in this one. Let me briefly give you an overview of the content of this article and what to expect:

  1. The equipment
  2. The planning of the shooting
  3. The actual photo taking
  4. The editing

The Equipment

Let's begin with the equipment. For the photos I just used my mobile-phone. My phone is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. The quality of the pictures is great. The only problem was the lighting.

I bought two big studio lights. There were pretty unwiedly. Way to big and blocked my whole appartment. It was crazy once they were built up. Anyway I only used one light. I did not return them because on one hand I need some extra lights and on the other hand I still dream and play around with the idea of having a YouTube channel, so they might come in handy in future projects.

For my product picture purpose they were not suitable tough. I came up with a better idea: A Foto-Box! I stumbled across this idea by chance when looking at different products on Amazon. It was the best solution for my purpose. A box which you can fold up and which even has great lighting.

Check the picture below to get an idea. With this approach it was pretty easy to take the pictures.

The Planning & Shooting

The plan was to shoot simple, clear product pictures. Nothing fancy or too special.

I decide to go for the straight shot of the product. I cleared all my table and set up my photobox and started shooting.
I realized I can change and vary the ankle when turning my phone upside down.

To get some more details I shot the glass and the spice itself seperately.

The Foto-Box was super handy since it has a clear background and lighting. Check the pictures below 😄

The Editing

I use Adobe Lightroom (the free version!) to edit my pictures. For my purpose it's enough and I can get the best out of my pictures.

I needed to pay extra attention to the format:
To upload them on sopify they must be in square form. I found this out later once I uploaded them and saw all pictures had different sizes.

The Result

Summary:

My second launch- same product picture process- was way more fluent.
I knew how to set up my table, how to hold my phone and how to edit.

It was a quite straight forward process.

It was fun and I am amazed from the whole field product photography.

Whenever I look at any ad I can feel the work behind it 😄 Respect to every creative product photographer!

Alright, that were my insights about product pictures. One of the most important pillars when it comes doen to starting an online business and selling your product on a webshop.

Feel free to message me (insta dm, email) if you have any questions!
